Pleasanton is located on the east side of San Francisco Bay and is bordered by Martinez to the north and west, Oakland to the south, and Walnut Creek to the east. It is about 25 miles from downtown San Francisco. The first permanent settlement in what would become Pleasanton was made on May 12, 1851 when Hiram Maxim founded a farmstead in what is now part of Martinez. This early community developed around farming activities including raising livestock and harvesting fruit trees for export. By 1860 a small town had arisen with a school, Methodist Episcopal Church (now Calvary Chapel), two stores and twenty-six residents. A post office was established in 1865 and served until 1875 when it became part of Martinez. The opening of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1885 led to an increased demand for goods brought into northern California by railroads. In 1886 local citizens built a grist mill which operated until 1915; also that year they erected the first blockhouse on Main Street as part of their effort to protect their community from bandits who roamed the area during this time period. In 1907 Pleasanton voters passed an ordinance forbidding gambling within its limits; however this prohibition was repealed 2 years later by Measure E (1909). That same year Alice Paul penned her song "A Hundred Miles Away" which soon gained fame through media exposure throughout North America following its release on July 4th that year by Columbia Records Nashville division president Jules Levy along with producer/songwriter Irving Berlin.
