Today's residents are engaged in various businesses such as retail, food services, construction/engineering/landscaping/real estate, health care services (including hospitals) and professional sports teams (the NBA's Lakers and NHL's Kings). There is also a large agricultural sector with crops such as grapes and almonds grown along with livestock such as horses and cows

Pleasant Hill, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,565 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County and is bordered by San Bernardino to the north and east, Lancaster to the south-west and east, and Simi Valley to the west. The first settlers in what would become Pleasant Hill were farmers who arrived from Northern California around 1847. They began farming sheep near present-day Fillmore and established a cotton gin in 1853. By 1860, they had also built a Lutheran church on Main Street. In 1868, two brothers named Edward Hagerty purchased land in what would become Pleasant Hill from the original settlers for $10 per acre. They founded Hagerty Oil & Gas Company on Sierra Vista Avenue and developed it into an oil refinery that became one of Southern California's leading producers of gasoline and other petroleum products. The townspeople renamed their new town after Hagerty's brother-in-law Samuel Morse (1792–1872), founder of Western Union Telegraph Company (later NBCUniversal) who lived near them while he was working on his transmission line from Bell Ranch to Pasadena. Pleasant Hill experienced significant growth during World War II as many local companies produced munitions for the war effort such as ammunition manufacturer Armour Data Products Incorporated (ADPI). The post office was opened in 1945 by Mrs. Aileen Laughlin with her husband John Laughlin Sr., father of Chairman James P. Laughlin I Corps)(Ret.) serving as Postmaster General concurrent with his duties as Mayor of Los Angeles In 1957, Pleasant Hill annexed part of Lancaster City which then had a population over 10,000 residents including schools, outpatient clinics and an airport like those found in most towns across America during this time period when city government was collapsing due to economic problems brought about by postwar suburban development vernacular architecture replaced traditional civic infrastructure vernacular architecture characterized American towns during this era which included many houses with no roof or thatched roof where tile roofs were common
Pleasant Hill was founded in 1847 by John C. Fremont and his wife, Maria Miller. The town grew rapidly due to the nearby gold fields and its proximity to the San Francisco Bay Area. By 1870, Pleasant Hill had a population of 5,000 residents. In 1876, the town reached its peak with the opening of the Central Pacific Railroad through central California. This helped to spur development in Pleasant Hill and adjacent towns such as Walnut Creek and Dublin. In 1902, Pleasant Hill was incorporated as a city under the laws of California.
