Pleasant Hill is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 20 miles south of Bakersfield. The population was 2,471 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1879 by John H. Pleasant and his wife Abigail Ayer. It became part of Kern County in 1907. William McKinney, who had been elected governor of California in 1906, decided to move the county seat from Bakersfield to Pleasant Hill because it was nearer the public services available there. The first post office was established at Pleasant Hill on December 12, 1879. In 1904, Pleasant Hill incorporated as a city under the name of Hope City. In 1916 it changed its name to Pleasant Hill after being selected as the new county seat for Kern County by an act of the state legislature. The last mayor of Hope City was Harry Wetherbee and the first mayor was John Ayer (1879-1902). Pleasant Hill experienced significant growth during World War II due to its proximity to Bakersfield and its military base (the Air Force Base) at nearby Topeka Airport. However, following the war's end, growth slowed down and most residents left for other areas within or outside California during that time period. Baker Valley Regional Park opened in 1946 adjacent to Plymouth Drive which bisected Happy Valley Road then became known as "The Valley". This free-standing park contained playgrounds, tennis courts, baseball diamonds/stadiums and hiking trails through woodlands bordering Interstate 880 just east of Happy Valley Road off exit 97A from I-5 near Fresno; today this area is home to community gardens with views of nearby mountains including Mount Whitney National Park inside Yosemite National Park across Highway 39 from downtown Fresno). Happy Valley Rd between US 99W & I-5 will become "Valley Parkway" when future looping I-5 are built around Fresno's central business district - this project is still in progress & has not yet started! Another interesting development occurred when CA State Parks announced plans for a large recreational campground adjacent to their Off-Road Vehicle Recreation Area just north of town on Buffalo Creek Blvd SE off SR 921S from SR 1094S (Webster Gentry Wilderness Preserve) - this large campground would have numerous restaurants,.campsites., grills., heated pool., laundry facilities., basketball court./parking lot., whirlpool tub./spa complex., etc...
