One of the goals of this program was to provide funding for gentrification projects in neighborhoods such as Pleasant Hill which were experiencing low population density and high levels of poverty. In 1933, after many years of planning and fundraising by local residents, the City Council approved a plan to build a new park on what is now Eastlake Avenue near Highland Park Boulevard. This park was christened "Pleasant Hill Park" and it served as an interim location for community meetings between developers and neighborhood groups until an permanent location could be found. In 1951, following passage of the Civil Rights Act OF America Amendments (A), Pleasant Hill's African American citizens organized themselves into Shriners Hospitality Association (SHA) which helped maintain social service programs within their community while also protesting against discrimination throughout Southern California during those years. SHA properties across Northern California continue to maintain these functions today including: Redwood Casino & Hilton Hotel - Oakland; Fillmore Auditorium - San Francisco; Masonic Temple - Los Angeles; Regency Ballroom & Grand Ballroom - Beverly Hills; Beacon Theatre - New York City; Bel Air-Levin Gardens - Los Angeles; Ascot Racecourse - England During this time period there also increased development proposals within walking distance or even within driving distance of SHRA properties including: Interstate 5 / North Figueroa Street Extension project currently under construction at I-5/Muni exit 264 next door to SHRA property at 12th St./I-5 junction near Foxborough Rd.; redevelopment proposal for portions of West Hollywood which are adjacent parcel associated with I-10/North Figueroa Freeway intersection just southbound off I-10 outside UCLA Medical Center whereupon South Pasadena intersects I-10 about 2 blocks east thereof immediately southwesterly along First Street concurrent withAgoura Hills Boulevard;[4] plans for new housing developments adjacent thereto known as "Hollywood South" or simply "South Pasadena". These projects have not yet been completed but are reportedly close due toFunding issues unique to each one
Pleasant Hill is a small city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay Area and is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward Combined Statistical Area. Pleasant Hill was founded by Captain William Richardson in 1847 as a farming community called "Richardson's Landing". The name was changed to "Pleasant Hill" in 1853 after General Mariano Vallejo recommended it to Colonel Edwin Walker. The first school in Pleasant Hill was opened in 1852 by Mrs. Higginson and two teachers. In 1865, Pleasant Hill had its own post office and telephone system. In 1870, Captain Richardson built a mill on the riverbank opposite his house for grinding flour for local consumption andexport. A sawmill followed in 1875; both mills were destroyed by fire in 1886. The first store opened in 1888 when Mrs. Fenton bought land from Capt Richardson for $5 per acre (equal to $100 today). A new store building was constructed between 1914 and 1916 using brick foundry products from Waddingtonsville near Antioch to create an efficient warehouse operation with large floor space that allowed goods to be distributed throughout the town without having them piled up on one section of the building.- By 1908 there were sixteen stores operating out of nine buildings including several departmental stores which became one giant chain known as The Waddington's Store Chain (). A post office operated at Pleasant Hill from 1889 until 1915 when it moved to nearby Concordia where it remained until 1978.— By 1911 there were twenty-eight people living in Pleasant Hill with six schools serving grades K-12: three public schools (grades 1-4), four private schools (grades 5-8), two parochial schools (Marist Brothers School #1 & 2), one denominational school (The Episcopal Church) In 1912 Mayor John Larkin established a Park District which included what is now downtown Pleasant hill.— After World War I many residents left or were driven out by high rents associated with postwar technology advances like airplanes, automobiles, refrigeration, etc.— Industry replaced agriculture as mainstay of society with plants such as Boeing Aircraft Manufacturing Company making Dearborn Street into an international commercial center—Population peaked at 10,000 during World War II before declining following 1945 atomic bombings and other social disruptions
