A group of men from nearby Livermore developed a rifle range on the property in 1894 and began to offer targets to the townspeople. In 1902, they built a shooting gallery and pistol range using money donated by local businessmen. In 1916, they opened their own ammunition store. In 1919, they renovated the schoolhouse into a rifle range and gunsmith shop. The business became known as Pleasant Hill Rifle & Pistol Armory until it closed its doors in 1978.

It is located on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley, about 20 miles southeast of Bakersfield, and about 45 miles southwest of Fresno. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. The name "Pleasant Hill" may be derived from Pleasant Valley or from its location near two springs called "Valley Springs." The first Europeans to visit this area were Missionaries who founded San Francisco in 1776. They named their mission "San Antonio de Padua" after Pope Clement VIII's viceroyalty in that region. In 1814-1815 Spanish land grants were made to Ranchojoncito (now part of Pasadena) and other areas around Hillsborough Village by Governor Manuel Micheltorena as part of efforts to expand Mexican holdings southward into what is now Los Angeles County. This area became known as Rancho Santa Ana de Buena Park when it was acquired by Captain George Wolk in 1868. A school was built there in 1870 which became known as West Side High School before becoming Pleasant Hill High School in 1903. In 1881 one acre (0.40 km²) of land west of Main Street was patented to J C Moody and his brother John Moody for $1,000 by Edward Molyneux Smith under patent No.: 6055479; they named their property after Englishman James Craig Moody who had been sent overland from British possessions along the Central Coast during the gold Rush era and had become a major player on that portion of the continent with interests including mining, shipping, cattle ranching and real estate development among others In 1916 a new post office called Pleasant Valley opened with mail service only until 1917 when an Addison-Wesley Telephone Company line arrived making it possible for people to call friends back home with phone conversations lasting up to an hour . From then on calls could be made both day and night long distance without having to wait for hours for someone on the end side

In 1857, the United States Mint was founded in nearby Westwood by Elias Cogswell and others on land that would later be renamed Mount Prospect Place, now called Hollywood Boulevard. Soon afterward, other entrepreneurs began developing properties around Mount Prospect Place including William Randolph Hearst's Mansion (later Hearst Tower) and Donald Trump's Castle/Trump Park Golf Course which still stand today within walking distance of each other on La Brea Avenue in Midtown Los Angeles
