Pleasant Hill is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 5,868 at the 2000 census. The Pleasant Hill post office closed on November 3, 2013. The first people to live in what is now Pleasant Hill were Buena Vista Indians who hunted and gathered plants for their diet. They built lodges near the present day courthouse and schoolhouse. In 1847 the Pueblo of San Gabriel sent two men, José Ortega and Francisco García to purchase land from the Buena Vista Indians for $5 per acre. They laid out a town on the site of what is now known as Pleasant Hill. The first house was built by José Ortega in 1849. The name "Pleasant Hill" originated with a grant given by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to Franciscan missionaries Father Antonio Vallejo and Brother Jose Agustín de la Cruz on December 15, 1851. It means "place where there are no trees." The grant allowed for RanchoLa Esperanza (later called Rancho Rinconada) which included most of today's Pleasant Hill area including present-day Sutherland Park and parts of La Posada and other neighborhoods within that rancho. In 1864 Captain John Sutter came through this area while exploring the Gold Rush led gold prospecting party organized by General James Kossuth under orders from President Abraham Lincoln to explore possible new goldfields in California beyond Sacramento County limits On October 8th he discovered an unclaimed claim about 12 miles NW of town on what would become known as Sutter's Mill Road/State Route 35 near Redding After months of exploration they found more nuggets but no gold so they abandoned their search early winter 1865-66 returned home with only enough supplies to build another cabin before continuing south down State Route 35 looking for new fields Shortly before leaving they found another unclaimed claim about 6 miles NE of town on what became known as Waddell's Mill Road/SR 712 near Unionville . This claim was sold to Jno Haggerty for $1,000 cash plus 10 acres where he erected a millstream show place later becoming one of downtown Pleasant Valley's first commercial areas . That fall Captain Sutter again explored when his party discovered another large deposit along State Route 119 west of Redding mining camps then abandoned because red earth was not profitable . He returnied with three days' worth of provisions including 400 pounds weight crude silver ore mineralized at Esmeralda Creek about 17 miles SW today’s Modesto After further exploration he reported finding good possibilities west of Redding across northernSacramento County whereupon Public Law 89 granted him exclusive rights to all such discoveries made during 1861-1865 without compensation to original claimants ." - Source: Encyclopædia Britannica Online On July 31st 1870 Jno Haggerty received US patent #717,284 for his invention entitled Steamboat NavigationLS – A Model Steam Boat For Landings And Departures By Water

Pleasant Hill is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California, about 25 miles east of San Francisco. The original Pleasant Hill post office was established in 1879. The name derives from the Indian word "prah" meaning "humble." The town was first settled by Italian Americans who came to the area for agriculture and ranching. They built a few homes on land that is now part of the Pleasant Hill Regional Park. By 1912, there were only around 40 people living in the town. In 1922, Pleasant Hill incorporated as a city and experienced rapid growth due to its location midway between San Francisco and Oakland. In 1965, it merged with nearby Richmond to form the City of Richmond proper. At its peak, the city had over 100,000 residents and employed over 200 people in downtown areas such as Market Street and Interstate 80/I-580. However, during the late 1990s and early 2000s economic conditions deteriorated which led to mass layoffs throughout the city government including many of its top officials including Mayor Richard Riordan and City Councilmember Don Rosenberg. In 2001 Richmond lost its bid for statehood which led to an increased focus on redevelopment opportunities in nearby Concordia Village rather than within Richmond itself Today most of Pleasant Hill's businesses are closed or have reduced operations due mainly to difficulties with finding enough qualified workers citing high school graduation rates as one major reason for joblessness among recent arrivals from other parts of California Additionally there have been increasing concerns about crime rates in what has been traditionally a relatively safe community .
