In 2000, Pleasant Hill had a population of 14,811 people; however, its population increased to 20,527 by 2010 due to annexation of the neighboring towns of Belmont and Dunster. In addition to annexed territory, other municipalities which include portions of Pleasant Hills include Menlo Park (), Redwood City (), Orinda (), Brookline Heights () and Fremont (). The primary economic activity within the boundaries of Pleasant Hill is agriculture as well as some manufacturing operations such as cheese production and paper milling though these have declined over time due to technological advances. Some services that are provided locally include transportation services along Interstate 280 through town limits as well as health care through local hospitals such as Stinson Beach Medical Center () and Peninsula Hospital ().

Pleasant Hill is a small town in Kern County, California, located about 20 miles east of Bakersfield. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The first people to live here were the Yokuts and Mono Puebloans who traded with the settlers in the area. Pleasant Hill was founded by George Capps in 1847 as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route between Los Angeles and Sacramento. In 1850, Pleasant Hill became part of what was called Rancho San Vicente de la Gómez Mexican land grant. As time went on, some of these grants were sold off or divided among others and finally becoming part of various incorporated townships throughout southern Kern County. In 1868, David Hackett bought Rancho San Vicente de la Gómez from José Castro for $4,000 dollars which he turned into an agricultural ranch that would house upwards of 200 tenant farmers and their families. This gift from Hackett remains one of the most significant events in Pleasant Hill's history. It also helped solidify Pleasant Hill's place within Kern County as a farming community with access to markets for its produce and goods exported to other parts of America. Over time, there have been several major changes to how life here works: the opening of Interstate 5 in 1957 changed much traffic patterns around this area; new housing developments began popping up all over town during the late 1960s/early 1970s; after 9/11/2001 many residents left for fear of terrorism; and now it is an increasingly busy town with both residential development (mostly single-family homes) as well as commercial spaces (large grocery stores and other businesses). A number of charities have been based here over the years including United Way (founded 1951), Valley Arts Council (1957), Good Samaritan Society (1968), St John's Episcopal Church (1979), Holy Cross Catholic Church (1985), Christkindl Shop & Cafe(1994-present), First Trinity Lutheran Church & School(2004-present). In recent years Pleasant Hill has seen increasing growth potential due to its location near I-5 Exit 182 ("The Towne Center"), job opportunities available through nearby companies such as Google Earth Plus Aerial Surveying services offered by Icon Aerial Photography Inc., Ames Research Laboratories providing Remote Sensing Solutions such as weather radar products used by law enforcement across America, medical equipment sales being carried out by O'Rourke Medical Sales Inc., as well as 2 Departmental Stores - JCPenney Home Store #1 opened in October 2006 adjacent to Hooters restaurant #2 which also houses a movie theater - both fronts are connected via covered walkways granting easy access from either side for shoppers looking for quick shopping when coming into town center after work or school etc... .
