In 1850 Captain James Hance married Clara Barton; they had three children: Mary Jane – born on October 9, 1852; James Edward – born on December 2, 1855; and Edwin Stanton Hance – born on January 3, 1860. In 1870 Captain James Edwards purchased 5 acres of land east of present day Pleasant Hill from John Sutter and donated it to the community as a parkland area called Edwards Park

Pleasant Hill is a small town in California, located about 25 miles north of San Francisco on Interstate 80. The population was 2,451 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in what is now Pleasant Hill were Native Americans who lived there during the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century. They called it "Kiowatch" meaning "place where deer grazed." In 1853, Captain John Blythe built a cabin here while he was exploring the area for Rancho Negro. He named it Pleasant Hill after his home town of Portsmouth, England. In 1876, Englishman George Brown settled permanently in this area and named itafter himself - Brown's Valley. In 1879 he founded the Pacific Railway company which built a line from Fresno to Stockton and then north to San Joaquin County. This line became known as the Central Pacific Railroad because it connected most of California with each other and with American cities like Sacramento and Los Angeles. The creation of this railroad changed many lives for both local people and those living near by. With more goods moving through these areas, jobs began to flow into Pleasant Hill from all over America. Businesses increased so much that by 1920 there were 7 businesses in town including groceries (Goudy's grocery store), hardware stores (Holtis Hardware), four banks (First National Bank & Trust Co., Merchants National Bank of Fresno, Citizens State Bank & Trust Co., Justus Wigglesworth Drug Store), two theaters (the nearby Patton Play House and movie theater next door to Goudy's) as well as several hotels including The Palace Hotel which opened in 1915 and still stands today! A new courthouse was built in 1921 on land donated by Judge Harry Swayne Jr.. It served as court house until 1975 when an updated courthouse replaced it which also still stands today - one of only four original courthouses remaining on central coast USA! In 1933 Mayor Charles Ayer formed a city government for Pleasant Hill which included a city manager who reported directly to him rather than having municipal trustees who reported to the mayor; this provided more stability for both the community and its leadership since mayors were not usually re-elected every year! Mayor Ayer also worked hard on creating parks within walking distance of everything else so that residents could enjoy nature without havingto leave their homes! One such park is PleasantHill Park located just east of downtown where you can find basketball courts, tennis courts, playgrounds,and even an open-air amphitheater!
