Pleasant Hill, California is a town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Oakland and is bordered by Hayward to the south and east, Emeryville to the north, and Walnut Creek to the west. The first people who lived in what is now Pleasant Hill were Native Americans. In 1853, John Sutter built his new settlement on land that he acquired from the Yurok tribe. Sutter named his new settlement after himself - Pleasant Hill in honor of his wife's home country of England. The town rapidly grew into a busy agricultural center during the late 19th century due to its location near major railroads and its close proximity to water supplies for irrigation and farming purposes. In 1906, Pleasant Hill became an incorporated village under state law. By 1938, when it merged with nearby Emeryville as part of a larger community development project known as "The Third Wave", Pleasant Hill had reached its peak as an inner-city suburb ofOakland with over 20 years experience as a bedroom community for Oakland professionals and their families. However, during World War II many residents chose not to move because they were fearful of being drafted into military service; however, when war ended two years later there were no casualties among those who relocated. During the 1970s through 1990s several businesses took off in Pleasant Hill - including Olive Garden (the first Italian restaurant in Contra Costa County), Jamba Juice (the first convenience store open within walking distance of every house), Super 8 Motels (the only motel in town since 1926), and Pritchett's pet supply store which became one of Contra Costa County's most popular tourist attractions until it closed in 2000. In 2000 representatives from numerous local business organizations met at Jack London Square in downtown Oakland to develop plans for redevelopment called "Pleasant Grove". A Master Plan was created that called for mixed-use development including residences, retail/restaurants/bars/gallery space etc., while preserving historical aspects of each building along with unique rooflines that would be characteristic of each individual structure throughout the neighborhood; however all plans for redevelopment fell through because developers could not find enough qualified applicants willing to take on such large projects without guarantees of economic stability or job growth beyond initial expectations

Pleasant Hill is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The first permanent settler in Pleasant Hill was John Wesley Hardin who arrived in 1847. He built a cabin on the east side of Highway 101 near what is now the corner of East and North avenues. In 1850 he married Mary Elizabeth Clements and they moved to what is now rural eastern Kern County. In 1861, Hardin's son John Wesley Hardin II founded what would become Pleasant Hill when he bought 8 acres (3 ha) of Rancho San Vicente from José Antonio Nazario Moreno. At that time it was one of only two ranchos remaining in Kern County after Mexican independence had ended six years earlier. John Wesley Hardin II died in 1865 and his son took over the rancho and continued to run it until 1872 when it was sold to George Hargrave Bryant for $8,000 (). George Hargrave Bryant owned other land in Kern County including portions of Palmdale and Lancaster before becoming its first director with responsibility for all county offices(). Pleasant Hill became an incorporated municipality on February 12, 1907 under California law change from unincorporated status to a town. On December 15, 1931 it lost its charter as part of a larger municipal restructuring which also included nearby Hanford City and Fullerton(). According to the 2000 census, there were 1,609 people residing in Pleasant Hill: 653 households out of which 50% are married couples living together; 241 families (or 52% by family size); 4 children or 0-14 year olds are residents; 73% are born outside of California; 7% are foreign born residents; 5% have no English proficiency
Pleasant Hill was founded in 1849 by Captain George T. Hill and his wife Rebecca. Pleasant Hill became a post office in 1851, and a town in 1859. The first school was built in 1865, and the first doctor was appointed in 1870. Pleasant Hill was named after the hill on which it was founded.
