Pleasant Hill, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The town was founded in 1879 by Mormons and was named for Pleasant Hill Heights outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1892, after a white man shot and killed two settlers in nearby Madera County, the Mormons built a gunswivel manufacturing plant in Pleasant Hill to produce their own pistols and revolvers. At its peak production during World War II, the plant produced over 1 million guns. After the war, gun interest waned in Pleasant Hill and it slowly declined until it disappeared from the local economy by 2000. The gunswivel industry began to rebound following 9/11 because Americans were looking for ways to protect themselves from terrorism. Pleasant Hill is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Contra Costa County and is surrounded by Walnut Creek to the north, Menlo Park to the east, Hercules to the south, and San Pablo Bay to the west. The first people who lived in Pleasant Hill were Native Americans. They hunted and gathered plants and animals in what is now Pleasant Hill. In 1844, when Rancho del Monte was sold to John Sutter, he began ranching in present-day Pleasant Hill. He changed the name of his rancho from Rancho del Monte de Santa Clara to Rancho San Pablo because it was near some hills called Palo Alto which were thought to be where Athena's temple would be built. In 1865, Atherton received a patent for 312 acres (12 km2) of land that included what is now Pleasant Hill. James Winton bought this patent from Atherton for $1 million dollars ($ million today). Winton named his new tract "Winton Gulch" after himself and donated it to the community as a parkland area. In 1885 local banker/farmer George Fenton purchased 5 acres (20 m2) of land east of Donnybrook Road and renamed it "Pleasant Hill". Fenton used this land for farming purposes until 1913 when he developed an artificial reservoir on his property that became known as Lake Merritt. In 1928 Ozzie Nelson opened his first grocery store at 9th & G streets NW in what is now known as Walnut Creek Village Shopping Center - later renamed anchor storesanchor stores such as JCPenney followed suit within a few years with Sears Roebuck also opening a location here soon after becoming available in Walnut Creek Village Shopping Center . This growth led not only Toejoe's convenience store but several other businesses such as dry cleaner's next door across G Street NW from JCPenney before eventually being acquired by Kroger supermarket chain about 10 years ago... all these major retailers had large anchors here so you could walk into any store without having too much trouble finding something you wanted or returning home.. many residents still take their shopping trips out into Walnut Creek Village Shopping Center each day despite its many competing retail outlets present today
