They named their small community after a hill they saw near their home on the Rancho San Pedro Adobe farm. In 1861, Pleasant Hill was incorporated as a city by an act of the state legislature. Pleasant Hill became known for its large number of519 children attending school during the 2003-2004 school year alone; second only to nearby Hanford City in terms of enrollment growth across all school districts statewide that year. During that same period, only two other Kern County communities had more than 500 students enrolled: Cupertino and Los Angeles (both populations over 1 million). In recent years, Pleasant Hill has seen some revitalization with new development being built on its outskirts including a Walmart Supercenter and several thousand square feet of retail space along Interstate 15W which opened in late 2009 adjacent to Valley View Elementary School - one of Kern County's most successful schools when it comes to student achievement rates. The first permanent settler in Pleasant Hill was George Waddell in 1847. It was named for General Anthony Pleasant, who fought with distinction during the Mexican-American War. The original homes were built of adobe and brick and are still standing today. Although it has been known for its agricultural products since the early days, most of its history has occurred within the boundaries of its current municipality which began to be organized as a town on November 3, 1914. The first mayor of Pleasant Hill was Hilda Ayer and she served from 1914 to 1918. Mayor Cramer served from 1919 to 1924 In 1924 Mayor Pritchett created an incorporated city by ordinance and it became a full member of the City Council on January 1, 1925 On July 15th 1920 married Gladys Gaborick in Foothills Congregational Church under circumstances that remain unknown but seem likely to have been political because her father had helped lay out what would become Pleasant Hill: two blocks east of his old home on Spring Road now called "Gladys Drive". By this time they had five children: four daughters and one son (John) born 1921; three sons - Kenneth (1925-27), Michael (1929-31), and Willard (1933-35) - all born after their parents' marriage; one daughter - Patricia Elizabeth Kappenberger - born 1936 When World War II ended there were few military personnel left in US West Coast so no new development took place until 1951 when Mayor Kappenberger approved plans for what would later become known as North Park Drive Historic District which included much older homes including those originally built by George Waddell . industrial park developments soon replaced agriculture as mainstay economy however local merchants continued selling food items such as eggs, milk, breads etc until about 1960 when grocery stores took over
