Pleasant Hill was founded on October 17, 1846 by John and Mary Ann Pleasant. The town was named for the hill that is located to the east of the town. It was first settled by Europeans who were looking for a place to build a sawmill. The mill started production in 1850 and until 1907 it produced lumber for local homes and businesses. In 1957, the mill closed down due to poor health of the owner, but when he died in 1966, his son continued operations as a small family-owned business. In 1997, the company lost its patent after being infringed upon by other mills. The mill has since been abandoned and most of the land used for agriculture or housing now stands unused.
