Pleasant Hill is a small town in Sonoma County, California, located about an hour south of San Francisco. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Santa Rosa–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara statistical area. The first recorded mention of Pleasant Hill was on November 7, 1876 when the post office was established in it. In 1892, Pleasant Hill had a millinery store and two sawmills. By 1916 there were three businesses in town- one grocery store and two restaurants- but no mills or factories. In 1974, Local 1090 of the United Steelworkers Organizing Committee (USOC) built the first local union hall in Sonoma County. The building still stands and is used by locals today as their headquarters. The first recorded sighting of a big, dark animal in the area was on November 1, 1876 when an Indian hunter saw three large black bears near the edge of a hill. The next year, on December 3, 1877, two men walking their dog saw a bear coming towards them and they ran away. On January 8, 1880, an American Express clerk named George A. Smith sighted what he thought was a deer in the area but it turned out to be a grizzly bear. On February 9th wagonloads of men from Livermore arrived at the San Francisco Depot to trade goods for hides and meat from various parts of California. One man who traveled with them reported seeing four grizzlies in the hills north of Pleasant Hill and one man said that he had seen thirty-six Grizzlies over rough country about five miles east of his ranch. In 1902 Jameson Hinton set up his home in Pleasant Hill and began taking pictures of Pleasure Valley which led to him becoming known as "the Father of Mammals in Northern California." In 1912 he also founded Sierra Club which continues to this day as one of North America's leading environmental organizations. In 1922 another photographer named Edward Munch came across some antlers on property belonging to Hinton and took some pictures that have since been preserved by the University Museum at Berkeley. In 1935 local resident John Lemen made history when he opened his popular restaurant called The Mountaineer inside what is now High Point Regional Hospital #1 in Pleasant Hill (now known as Kaiser Permanente headquarters). That same year The Times Fugitive Newspaper published an article about a groupof animals being spotted around town which included several reports from locals including those from Lemen's restaurant whereupon Highway 50 was renamed The John Lemen Highway after him!

The small town began as a mission settlement in 1826 and was named for Reverend John Pleasant, an American Presbyterian missionary. In the mid-19th century, Pleasant Hill became a bedroom community for San Francisco. However, by 1925, it had surpassed San Francisco as the most populous incorporated municipality in Contra Costa County with 2,182 residents. In 1984, Pleasant Hill voters passed a proposition to become an official city after years of discussion and debate between its residents and the City Attorney's office. The citizens of Pleasant Hill voted by referendum to change their name to "Pleasant Hill." This event is generally considered to be one of the most significant moments in local history because it signaled that locals were ready and willing to join forces with other municipalities in order to build a more cohesive community. It has been reported that since becoming an official city, Pleasant Hills has experienced strong growth due to its proximity to major employment centers within commuting distance as well as its growing reputation as a center for arts and culture.

Pleasant Hill is a small town in Kern County, California, located about an hour east of Los Angeles. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rancho Cucamonga–Monrovia metropolitan area. The first residents of Pleasant Hill were four families from San Diego who bought land in 1868 on what is now North First Street. They called their settlement "New Jerusalem." In 1872,pleasant hill was incorporated as a city with 15 white men and 25 women living in 17 homes. In 1870, Pleasant Hill had one store and six businesses. In 1902 it became the site of the largest oil well ever drilled by American Petroleum Company, when it opened its well on North First Street under the name "Pleasant Hill Oil Well." It produced over 1 million barrels of oil until it finally went out of business in 1969-1970 due to depletion of reserves. Today, there are only a few buildings remaining from those days including the old post office building which still stands next to Interstate 5 and also serves as a museum/library/. A number of local organizations continue to operate: The Pueblo Indian Tribe operates its own casino; Chamberlin Community Schools offers instruction through Advanced Placement courses; and The New Hope Baptist Church operated a school for African Americans from 1951-1994 before moving to nearby Arcadia.

Pleasant Hill is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,141 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the city of San Francisco and is bordered by Walnut Creek to the north and east, Menlo Park to the south, and Hercules Heights to the west. The original Pleasant Hill community was platted in 1853 as part of an effort by local landholders to increase their property values by offering easy access to water supplies through a ditch on their property. The area now comprising Pleasant Hill was first settled in 1858 when fifty-six families from Dublintown moved into what is now Pleasant Hill from parts of Walnut Creek Township. A post office called Pleasant Hill was established in 1859, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1865, James Hargrave founded Hargrave & Sons undertaker business with his brother Samuel Hargrave. They moved into their first building on Main Street near present day Redwood Avenue within two years. In 1870 they built a second building on North Avenue which still stands today as one of Contra Costa's most impressive residences for prominent citizens at that time. In 1875 James Hargrave married his wife Fanny Bancroft (1830-1912). In 1902, San Francisco earthquake destroyed many homes in downtown San Francisco and caused extensive damage throughout Contra Costa County including much damage done to residential areas such as those around Main Street between redwood Ave./Alameda St./Fremont St., Western Ave./Pleasant Hills Rd., and North Ave./Redwood Ave.. The entire town of San Francisco burned down during this quake with most residents either killed or trapped inside buildings or swept away when soil liquefied under high pressure resulting from both earthquakes and fire created at ground level combined! In 1915 James Hargrave sold his interest in the undertaker business to his son Sammie who continued it until 1978 when it merged with another funeral home company name change yet again! That same year also sees incorporation for new City government according to early records! Incorporation papers were filed 3/2/15 thru 3/9/15 under new name: "The City of Pleasant Hill"!!! At this time there may have been some competition among funeral homes due to incorporation but overall things seem more organized these days (check website for more details). A post office called Pleasant Hill resumed operations on March 15th 1915 after being dormant for nearly 2 years following the devastatingSan Francisco Earthquake - serving constituents until its discontinuation several months later on October 1st 1916 due largely To saturation from mail volume brought about by news of military activity & general panic!! On October 15th 1916 PLEASANT HILL POST OFFICE DIVORCED FROM SAN FRANCISCO GATEWAY MORTGAGE COOPERATIVE AFTER 50 YEARS OF OPERATIONS !! Independence Day weekend marks final cessation of postal service hereabouts!! On November 30th 1918 an act entitled "An Act Relative To Post Offices And Telephones In Contra Costa County" became effective providing for county wide telephone service beginning January 1st 1919!!! This marked an important milestone not only because Telephone service began but also because it marked end of hostilities between USA & Russia which had lasted since September 1914!!!!
