Pleasant Hill is a small community located in the Antelope Valley of Southern California. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Lancaster County district. Pleasant Hill is located on U.S. Route 101, about 20 miles northeast of Los Angeles and 25 miles northwest of San Bernardino. Its ZIP code is 92713. The town sprang up around a small post office established in 1887 by Dr. George Witherspoon and his wife, Sarah Jane Weller Witherspoon, after they moved from nearby Palmdale to start a new life in Southern California. The first postmaster was James Hickey, who served until 1893 when he was replaced by Witherspoon himself. The first store in Pleasant Hill opened its doors on Main Street in 1892; it was Jens Kratz’s Second Store which remains an important local landmark to this day. By 1898 there were six stores in town; four were owned and operated by citizens or their families, while two were leased from the Pacific Telephone Company (PT). In 1900 there were 10 businesses operating in town; nine were run by citizens or their families, one PT leaseholder operated three businesses out of town during that year-one being a hotel, one millinery shop and one general store all within five blocks of each other on Market Street between First Avenue and Third Avenue NW., also home to many homes built during that time period . In 1902 the population had grown to 15 residents; four stores still operated but two others had been bought out by PT owners leaving only eight businesses left open as late as 1970 when the last tenant went out of business . Most notable among these eight remaining locals was Harry Bitton who managed several grocery stores before selling them all to Walmart for $2 million back then! In 1910 Pleasant Hill boasted 12 churches with attendance totaling over 100 people per service; 11 services took place inside Churchesitters' Hall on First Avenue NW., while one service took place outdoors at Henry Park off Sixth Street NW.; Pastor John Ladd officiated at nine services though his parishioners could also attend services at any number of other places including three schools: Stonington Elementary School (now known as Preakness Elementary), Eastwood Intermediate School (now known as Westlake Intermediate School) and Pee Wee Senior High School which became Highland High School following annexation into Los Angeles proper in 1909! All told there were more than 50 religious congregation members living and working within a radius smaller than 3 blocks around Main Street where most services took place! A few years later Postmaster General Robert Fenton ordered all US mail delivered through Pomona instead so no longer would rural areas like Pleasant Hill have access to high-quality postal service! This change brought much excitement & inconvenience to many residents as not only did deliveries stop coming but prices for goods started soaring!! Many found themselves struggling just enough to afford basic needs such as food while others lost their jobs altogether because letters couldn't be sent anymore without paying extra fees!! One can imagine how difficult it must have been for those less fortunate given today's postage rates!! However, even with high postage rates many residents still hosted church functions & social events every week outside until quite recently when USPS discontinued doing so completely !! What memories do these events leave behind? It seems almost impossible now but back then everyone enjoyed good times together ?? Pleasant Hill is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas–Kern City Unified School District. The first Pleasant Hill post office was established in 1887. The name comes from a family joke that goes "Pleasant Hill means 'humble place.'" In 1907 Henry J. Smith founded the Humble Oil Company in what is now Pleasant Hill and named it after his home town of Humble, Texas. In 1949, the townsite of Pleasant Hill and surrounding land were acquired by the University of California at Berkeley for use as part of its new campus. The townsite remains an agricultural area to this day with many large fields devoted to cotton and other crops. The local economy has been based largely on agriculture since before World War II when many people worked on orchards and vineyards around the community center which still stands today (the original school building). After World War II most residents engaged in various forms of manufacturing: plastics, automobiles, munitions manufacturers etc., but slowly began to shift back towards farming during the 1970s as more jobs disappeared in nearby industries such as electronics and semiconductor manufacturing while others became available in new plant locations gridlock-free near downtown Salinas or just outside town on open space like Rancho Adobe Preserve which includes a golf course used by UC Berkeley students for practice purposes only
The community of Pleasant Hill was founded in 1879 by Captain John S. Hill and his wife, Sarah. The first post office opened in 1881, and the first store was built in 1884. In 1906, the town became a city. The population increased to over 4,000 by 1920, but declined to around 2,000 by the end of World War II. The population rose again during the early 2000s due to immigration and gentrification; however, it has since decreased again.
