The first Europeans to visit and settle in present-day Pleasant Hill were the Morongo Band of Mission Indians who arrived in 1769. They named their new settlement Yucca Vale because of the yucca plants that grew abundantly there. In 1846, when California became a state, the Morongo band petitioned the US government for land to be set aside as part of Rancho San Antonio del Potosi which was granted to them in 1851. The Morongo name for their new community may have originated with this donation. In 1868, Pleasant Hill had a post office and six stores. It was platted by Captain John Waddell with plat number 5791 on October 20th and took its name from nearby Yucca Valley (now known as Pleasanton). By 1870, it had 12 residents and two churches -- one Methodist and one Baptist -- both built by local citizens. In 1899, an electric railway line was established between Pleasanton and Fremont which caused a great influx of people into Pleasant Hill; however, most residents continued to live near their businesses until after World War II when they began moving out towards Calaveras County for jobs in Industry or Oakland.
