Pleasant Hill is a small town in central California, located about 25 miles east of San Francisco. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It has been inhabited by Native Americans since the 17th century and first came into contact with Europeans in 1836 when Captain John C. Frémont discovered it while exploring the nearby peaks of Mount Diablo. The name "Pleasant Hill" originated from two early residents, Isaac Thomas and his wife Sarah Goodspeed, who named their home Pleasant Valley after a field they had recently bought near present day Woodland Hills. The Goodspeed family continued to live there until 1924. In 1887, developer George Eastman built a house on what is now Elm Street for himself and his wife Lucy Addison Eastman. Addison was an heiress to theadditional fortuneella Jane Stanford which made her one of Northern California's most powerful women of her era. Addison founded the addendum Stanford University in Palo Alto in 1896 as part of her gift to that community which soon became known as Silicon Valley due to its concentration of computer companies at that time. After Jane Stanford's death in 1911, Addison donated land adjacent to her university for development into parkland which is today known as Stanford Park across from Addison Avenue on campus. In 1916, Pleasant Hill voters passed an ordinance authorizing local government within a radius of 10 miles (16 kilometers) of the town center to provide services such as water supplies and sewers; fire protection; police services; trash collection; and electioneering through machines called "poll books." Pleasant Hill is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 23,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first European settler in Pleasant Hill was John Hightower who arrived in 1846. He and his family built theirLog Cabin on what is now known as Log Road. In 1852, Hightower's son Edwin bought the land that includes present-day Pleasant Hill from the heirs of Samuel Morse. The town site was surveyed by Captain George Wetherald and named after General David Hunter's plantation in Georgia where he had been born some years earlier. A post office called "Pleasant Hill" was established in 1857, and remained in operation until 1906 when it became "San Francisco". In 1865, Isaac Newton opened a grove of tree nursery trees near where Bancroft Avenue now stands east of US-101. This business continued until 1870 when Newton moved to Livermore with his children Nancey (1863–1947) and Alonzo (1865–1948). Nancey married John Beale (1868–1965), an American Electrician who lived on Webb Avenue between 6th Street and 7th Street for most of his life before moving to Oakland Heights outside of Pleasant Hills to marry him there in 1951. Alonzo married Alice Setterfield (née Grosvenor) on October 3rd 1916 at St Ignatius Church west of Piedmont Avenue just south of Happy Valley Lane (). They raised two daughters: Patricia Elizabeth Setterfield (born December 12th 1952) who lives near Antioch; and Ellen Defoe Setterfield (born February 4th 1955) who currently resides in Mountain View CA., several grandchildren including Kevin Michael Setterfield; four great grandchildren; one great granddaughter; one brother - all three brothers predeceased them by many years each On October 22nd 1905 Charles Fenton opened a grocery store at 5555 MacArthur Boulevard which became known as The Fenton Grocery Store . It later merged with Safeway Incorporated . On November 2nd 1907 Dr Carruths Cigar Factory opened located at 6000 MacArthur Boulevard which also merged into Safeway Incorporated . Finally, on January 14th 1912 J C Palmer started a bakery across from High School #1 known as Palmer Bakery In 1902 the Southern Pacific Railroad built its first line through Contra Costa County linking San Francisco with Martinez via Hercules Station miles north through rural Contra Costa County The railroad doubled its mileage within five years making Pleasant Hill an important center for local commerce It wasn't until 1915 when an express train service began running between San Francisco and Sacramento stations bypassing Pleasant Hill altogether Although this service never reached its full potential because many commuters took buses instead trains stopped running around 1922 after Southern Pacific donated their tracks to the newly formed Transbay Terminal Railway Company
