In 1847, a group of land speculators from Sacramento purchased 640 acres of what is now Placerville in order to build a new town. The community was named after the nearby Mount Pleasant place in North Carolina. The first residents were farmers and their families who started farming around 1848. By 1870, the town had a population of 100 people. In 1876, an oil well was drilled in the area and production began that would make Placerville one of the most important hydraulic fracturing sites in California. The population continued to grow as businesses opened up and by 1920, there were over 1,500 people living in Placerville. Businesses such as banks and mills thrived during this time with many people working at these companies. Unfortunately, World War II led to decreased production and plagues which caused some residents to leave the town for fear of being drafted into service. However, by 1951, business had resumed and Placerville became once again a thriving community with many active businesses. During the late 1960s through early 1970s, there was growth within the local music industry as bands like The Grateful Dead played concerts at various locations throughout Northern California including Placerville. This led to increased traffic along Interstate 80 which caused problems for locals who wanted access to the parking lot or Concert Hall without having to go down long hallwayways full of cars!
