Placerville is a small city in the Inland Empire of California, located on the eastern bank of the Sacramento River. It is considered one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in California. The city began as a small Indian settlement on the east side of what is now Sacramento River, about three miles (5 km) from present-day Placerville. The first white settlers arrived in 1848, when George Patton and his party crossed over from Oregon and traveled upriver to prospect for gold. By 1850, there were about 20 families living in what is now Placerville. The town was named for General Josiah Quincy, who had served as governor of California during part of the Mexican–American War. pioneers built homes around a central square which became known as "Fenway Park". The first school was opened in 1851; it was later renamed Alhambra High School before becoming Placerville Union High School. In 1865, Mayor John Aiken organized a group to purchase 640 acres (248 ha) along present-day Folsom Street between Third and Fifth Streets for $1 per acre (0.50 ha). This land would become today's downtown area; it originally consisted of open grasslands used by cattle and horses while they grazed nearpresent-day Union Square. When this parcel was deeded toPlacerville citizens by Gov&rs game banjo pplc v/s state government c/o J M Potter cc 17 Sep 1865 thru 25 Dec 1865),the name change did not take effect until 1886 when downtown Placerville became "Downtown Sacramento"
