Placerville, California is located in the Mono County of California. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was platted in 1868 by James Irvine and others as a ranching post on Rancho San Luis Rey. In 1887 its name was changed to Placerville because of the high altitude and great views of Lake Oroville from its site on top of Hill 602 near present-day Hwy 99W. On July 16, 1932, Placerville became an incorporated town with a mayor and five council members under the supervision of a planning commission chaired by Dr. John A. Robertson. The first store in Placerville opened on December 2, 1871 when Wm Merrill organized his mercantile company from Red Bluff and purchased supplies for his new trading post at what is now 22nd Street and Euclid Avenue inside what are today known as Save’s Hardware & Supply Store (now Macy’s) along with some other building Lots here in townsite that were donated by Mr Merrill himself including parts of lot #1 already mentioned hereinabove which still stand to this day & surrounding lots also owning thereinon which are buildings erected therefor viz: Now existing save for two blocks eastwardly thereof on 21st Street between Park Row & Willard Road now used as storage by J B Sargent Poultry Co., Inc., a poultry processing plant owned/operated by International Harvester Co.; one block westwardly thence along 21st Street between Park Row & Ihrig Road formerly part of home built for Mrs Amelia Earhart; one block northwardly thence along Ihrig Road to 24th street where it met the old road leading eastward from townsite; one block southwesterly thence along 24th Street to Post Office Rd., now State Route 98 meeting therewith againState Route 98 which served as main route into town until about 1915 when it turned northeast then southeast then northeast again becoming Ute School Rd./Ute Ave./Hwy 99W before finally rejoining State Route 98 just south of tonight’s Post Office Rd., thus making all these streets streets within our limits since platted date aforesaid etc.—James Irvine (1868-1932) A few years later, Irvine decided to move his business operations out into larger buildings so he began buying more land adjacent to his original ranching post - lots 1 through 4 were bought in 1887 for $2000 each ($102,000 total). According to historical records kept byplaceradio.com, “Irvine also founded both Placer County Courthouse (1892) and Calico Savings Bank (1899).” In 1933 after only 10 years incorporation, Placerville voted unanimously to become an independent city with its own mayor and five council members under local control instead of being supervised by an appointed planning commission like earlier. Prior thereto no such vote had ever been taken within the Town itself! Today's community has experienced rapid growth due largely to Interstate 80 construction that began around 1960 creating new employment opportunities throughout Northern California while concurrently reducing travel times between Sacramento and various points east across America necessary for agricultural shipments bound for China funneled through nearby Tehachapi Pass over Mt Whitney National Forest - all resulting in increased demand for goods produced locally including wine, cheese, applesauce etcetera impacting prices paid locally versus those generated outside originating regions thereby stimulating economic development within our small but thriving community - something not currently possible or desired anywhere else within Greater Sacramentoarea! As recently as 2003 residents approved amending their City Charter further allowing full independence status sans mayoral oversight should any major changes or concerns arise affecting their qualityof life – something unheard of prior thereto even among many smaller towns situated much closer to I-80 than we do today!
