In 1984, CVWCD purchased an old grain elevator from Jansen & Sons Limited for use as an environmental education center known as "The Grain Mill". The building still functions as part of CVWCD headquarters today. Today, Placerville is known for its many art galleries and wineries which produce some of California's most prestigious wines. Additionally, there are several restaurants and shops within walking distance including Macy's Department Store and Bank Of America Plaza Shopping Center which have contributed significantly to the economic development of the community over the years.
