It contains five contributing structures: One contributing structure is an Administration Building constructed 1893-94 by Danish builder Søren Pindborg at a cost of $5,000; it housed office space for City Clerk Mabel Dirksen ($871 per year in 1913). Another contributing building is an Early 19th century Store built on lot #2 adjacent to lot #1 in 1892; it occupied three storefronts with side entrances facing Third Street South.. It contained four loaded wagons stored inside along with foodstuff such as meatpies, bread rolls and butter etc., for sale outdoors during warm weather…..It also served as a post office from 1896 until 1903…. Other buildings within the district include two residences built c1910-11 by architects Maurice Jarry & Sons at 814 N Main St.; these were purchased by Mrs. Lillian Wertheim who resided there until her death in 1984………Two contributing houses are also included within the district: One dating from 1915-16 while another dates back to 1937-38 adjoining lot 2 upon which it was erected; both were razed following fire damage caused by lightning strike on July 26th 1948…..Notable residents associated with early Plaquerville include Social Security Administrator Harry Bridges who lived at 736 Main Street from 1923 until his retirement age in 1978; Mayor Tom Christensen who resided at 515 East Third street from 1957 until his death on February 24th 1991…. Other notable figures associated with early days include Mr. & Mrs William Pease who operated a grocery store adjacent to existing Post Office beginning 1918……………In additionto its role as local history center/library since 1961 [it was] designated “California Historical Landmark” March 17th 1965…………………………………………………………………………………..
Placerville is located in Alameda County, California. It was laid out by David Jones in 1847 and named for him. The first post office was established in Placerville on April 25, 1849. The town grew rapidly due to its location and goods transportation connections with nearby Oakland and San Francisco. By 1860, Placerville had a population of 1,500 people. A railroad depot was built at the town in 1865 and the first train arrived in Placerville on November 8, 1865. The town experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century thanks to its proximity to both major cities and new industrial developments such as goldmining operations. In 1915, the last coal mine closed down in Placer County and most of the population began moving away from rural areas into urban centers like Berkeley or Oakland.
