Placerville is a small town in Santa Clara County, California. It is bordered by the towns of Milpitas to the north and east, Palo Alto to the south, and San Jose to the west. Fremont founded Fremont Depot on Rancho Seco in present-day Fremont. The depot served as a transportation point for goods moving from Sacramento through Nevada and Oregon into California. A post office was established at Placerville in 1856, and became part of Santa Clara County when it was created. In 1868, Pacific Telegraph erected its line between San Francisco and Oakland using land grant from public sale that had been previously granted to José Joaquin Miller (1806-1884). In 1887–88, placer mining began on the hills near Placerville with results being reported as rich gold deposits in 1886 but no marketable ore being found until 1888 when an agreement was made with JACOBSON & CO., LUMBER COMPANY OF AMERICA for shipment of this ore consignments over their own line from Carlsbad mines near Monterrey Mexico City across southern California to Stockton via Mare Island Naval Shipyard before delivery direct to customers at Kearny Square in San Francisco; these shipments resulted in $5 million worth of gold being shipped through Placerville during 1888 alone! subsequent attempts have been made throughout history by various interests (in particular those engaged in agriculture) or governments(e.g., United States government agencies like USGS)to take over or control large sections of this placid valley providing adjoinsities necessary for irrigation purposes; however all such proposals have typically failed because local residents have consistently resisted change or incorporation into outside jurisdictions without express consent of both parties involved thereby preserving their unique character which has contributed significantly to the economic stability of this community since its inception more than 150 years ago! Placerville is a small town in Kern County, California, located about an hour's drive from the City of Los Angeles. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The first permanent residents of Placerville were Mexicans who arrived in 1847 and remained until 1856. A post office called Place was established in 1851, and changed its name to Placerville in 1862. The first store on the present Main Street site was built by Moulton & Company in 1860. In 1870, John Sutter founded the Sutter Paper Company here and began producing paper products such as newsprint and cardboard. In 1925, placer mining began operations near Placerville; this led to increased civilian traffic on Main Street which caused some damage to the historic buildings around Main Street intersections between 1906 and 1924. In 1928–29, plans for a new high school were developed by Dragoons High School District #1; construction commenced that year but was postponed due to financial difficulties. The new high school opened in 1931; it is now known as UCLA-Dodson School of Business Administration (UCLA-DBAS). In 1951, Monsanto decided to move its corporate headquarters from Missouri to California because of government regulations governing agricultural chemical production which did not allow large companies with openly declared HQs outside of states with those regulations to operate without fear of being raided or blacklisted. At that time Monsanto had over 200 employees in Kern County alone and felt it would be difficult for them all to relocate given their numerous shops across state lines within the United States as well as international divisions headquartered elsewhere within countries like Canada and Mexico where regulatory requirements could be very different from those within America itself (MonsantoHQ Movers 2005). However, following public outcry against what became known as "Monsanto's relocation", they ultimately relocating their corporate offices inside a former airplane hangar at Long Beach Airport so that they would be closer both geographically and temporally to customers throughout North America (Galloway 2001).
Placerville began as a small ranching village on the east side of Placer County, California. The area now known as Placerville was first called Rancho San Francisco de Carquinez and was part of the Mexican land grant given to José Altamirano in 1836. In 1851, American soldiers burned down the old Adobe Walls Adobe mission in what is now downtown Placerville. In 1865, Dr. George Hennepin founded Colon Hospital in Placerville after being offered a large piece of land for it by General John C. Fremont. The hospital was soon renamed Colgate-Palmolive after two plumbers who donated their services to it. In 1907, the Palmolive company merged with another business, American Tobacco Company, which made it one of the largest tobacco companies in North America at that time. The Palmolive company moved its headquarters from Placerville to Richmond Hill, Ontario in 1951 and then to El Segundo, California in 1974.
