However, through government legislation passed during that time period (e.g., National Firearms Act), Placerville regained some prominence as an arms manufacturing center once again. Placerville is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 2,818 at the 2010 census. It is located in Kern County. The first settlers were French Catholics who arrived in 1849. They soon deserted and platted a town site on the banks of the Palouse River. The name Placerville was chosen to honor Father Josèphe LaFontaine, an early Catholic missionary in the area. In 1876, local farmers started growing hay and other crops for local consumption; this led to Placerville becoming a commercial center for agricultural production. In 1911, the U.S.-owned Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a line from San Francisco to Promontory Point near today's Anza-Borrego Desert National Monument; Placerville became one of many stations on this line. This increased traffic and led to development along Main Street which now includes several shops, restaurants and galleries as well as Placidus Elementary School (which serves students grades pre-K through 8) and two churches: Our Lady of Mercy Cathedral (founded in 1875) and Stations Church (founded in 1886). The post office was established at present-day Placidus on February 14, 1861; it closed January 12th, 1951 due to high postage rates set by Calvary Insurance Company at that time! In 1924, Toombs Air Force Base was established adjacent to what is now known as Toombs Field artillery range east of town; during World War II airmen from nearby Dyess Air Force Base used Placidus Naval Ammunition Plant northeast of town for storage purposes until 1945 when all weapons were turned over to the United States Navy at pier #2 adjacent to today's Walmart Supercenter lot across from IHOP restaurant - east side parking lot only!! Today there are NO buildings or access within reach except via Narrow Gate Rd which leads into old building between Walmart lot & restrooms which open onto roadway after dark!!! So much for making life easy for people who live close by!!!!!

By 1930, Placerville had become an sleepy agricultural community with few permanent residents and struggled with economic decline until it began experiencing revitalization in recent decades as a result of new development within its boundaries. Today, Placerville is an attractive small city with vibrant cultural values that have helped make it one of Sacramento's most popular destinations for nightlife and shopping alike.
