Placerville, California is a small town in the Kern County of southern California. The population was 4,873 at the 2010 census. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Bakersfield and 50 miles (80 km) west of Fresno. The town was founded in 1876 by eccentric and wealthy banker George H. Placerville and his wife, Julia Grant Placerville. The Grants were originally from New York City but had moved to Southern California in 1875 to live near their friend Judge John Wickersham who had purchased Rancho San Bernardino from Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. George H. Placerville named his new town after his mother-in-law while Julia Grant renamed it for her father-in-law, Ulysses S. Grant Jr., when he became President of the United States in 1865. The first post office was established in 1876 and remained open until it closed on July 15, 1907 due to lack of mail service between Bakersfield and Placerville proper. The population began grow rapidly following placer mining operations developed along the Kern River during the late 19th century which yielded many valuable minerals such as gold, silver, lead and other resources that attracted settlers to this sparsely populated area outside Los Angeles County periphery starting around 1880s. After World War II growth accelerated due to increased agricultural production; housing development; military bases; Interstate 10 movement; international trade; ranching activity; and suburban sprawl throughout Kern county resulting in an increase in socioeconomic diversity with some families earning over one million dollars per year while others earned less than $50 per week according as 2008 Census data showed that nearly half of all placervilleians lived below poverty line earning an annual income under $15,000 . An Agricultural Experiment Station was established at nearby Glenn Grove by local farmers during 1915–16 with funding provided by Governor Hiram Johnson who wanted to learn more about how best to grow crops for cash crops such as citrus fruits, vegetables or cottonseed oil within Californias newly expanded state boundaries following passage of the Gadsden Purchase Act on February 5th 1916 . In 1917 a water tower was erected along edge of town serving residents well into the 21st century . A high school opened its doors for students on September 9th 1919 after being built primarily with private donations from citizens . In 1924 voters passed a resolution authorizing city fathers petition for incorporation into municipally chartered city limits making Placerville one of only two towns within Kern county not incorporated into any municipality despite having more residents voting against incorporation than for it (the other being Chico). In 1933 voters approved a proposition authorizing creation of a bank which would become merged into First National Bank Of America later that decade giving rise to today's current name - First American Bank & Trust Company

The town was founded in 1872 by theona family and named for Placidus, the father of one of the original families. The population was 1,680 at the 2010 census. The first white settlers in what is now Placerville were James Atherton and his brother George Atherton. They established a post office here on December 15, 1872. James had come overland from Oregon looking for new land to settle after his brother died of fever near Bakersfield. On December 22, 1872, General Sam Wells granted them a 640-acre (2 km²) grant that included present-day Placerville. It was one of only two such grants given out during California's initial Gold Rush period - the other being Stockton.. The first buildings were log homes built by James Atherton and his brother George Atherton on their 640-acre (2 km²) grant in December 1872. The home where Congressman William McKinley delivered his final speech before leaving for Karaganda in Russia on January 6, 1901 is still standing today and has been preserved as part of the historical district known as Old West End within Placerville boundaries... In November 1880 John Capps bought 320 acres (12 ha) northeast of Placerville from David Snively for $5 per acre ($160/ha). This purchase marked the beginning of agricultural development within what would become Placerville. By 1886 there were 10 cotton mills operating in nearby Auburn with capacity to weave up to 5400 metric tons/a day using 50 workers each! By 1896 there were 20 cotton farmers residing within 2 miles (3 km) radius of downtown Auburn selling their crops to local buyers who then resold them into local markets throughout California! Cotton remained America’s leading export crop until it went extinct due to World War II....
On November 6, 1846, the first settler in Placerville, California was John C. Fremont. The town was named for General George A. Smith who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of California.
