Placerville is a small, unincorporated community in Monterey County, California. It is located on California State Route 21 about 12 miles east of Salinas and 17 miles west of Monterey. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. The original settlement at Placerville was founded in 1852 by members of the Royer family who had come to California from Illinois. In 1854, Brigham Young and his followers journeyed through Placerville on their way to Visitacion Valley and the Mormon Battalion's first winter encampment in northeastern Mexico. On January 15, 1860, President James Buchanan issued an Executive Order designating Placerville as a town within the newly organized Monterey County. The name "Placerville" was derived from "prairie" which means "land belonging to someone." In 1905, two brothers named Edward Ayer and Jesse Wimer opened a grocery store in what is now known as the old post office building. They were successful enough to buy land near present-day Hearst Castle for a shopping center that became known as Golden Gate Park West Park after they donated it to the city of San Francisco in 1935. That same year, placer mining began on nearby Mount Shasta and led to increased demand for water supplies for Placerville; therefore, many homes were built around water wheels that delivered water directly into residents' gardens or cisterns. Today much of this architecture still remains throughout much of downtown Placer Village; most notable are two large clock towers which dominate what used to be Center Street across from City Hall (now University Avenue). In 1926–27 local school board member Mrs. Florence Sydnor constructed what is now called North First Street between Main Street and Seventh Avenue as a promenade for her students between homebound classes during lunchtime and afternoons when no buses could bring them back into town because of construction work going on down Market Street at that time (the structure still stands today). This street served both schools until 1942 when Consolidated School District No 10 moved all its facilities along Ninth Avenue southward including North First Street so that students could attend South San Francisco High School then northbound upon reaching Market Street again (the building also still stands today). Placerville, California is a town in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is located in the East Bay region of Northern California. The townsite was first registered on October 14, 1859. On January 1, 1872, it became part of the new city of San Francisco. The Placerville industry began with agriculture and cattle raising as early as 1850s. However, when the Central Pacific Railroad arrived in 1887 and started to build its line through Stanislaus County from Sacramento to Petaluma Peninsula platted agricultural land for settlers who would be able to purchase their own homesteads north of Napa Valley and east of Romanoff's Valley," according to "A History of Sonoma County" by Hana Sawaya-Greenberg (Walker & Co., 1991). By 1909 there were over 100 businesses operating in Placerville with a population size over 1,000 people including several hotels and restaurants while small businesses grew such as a grocery store and laundromat. In 1923 Mayor George Mazor created what is now known as Mazor Park which bordered North Placer Street on one side and North Cowen Avenue on the other side named after him. In 1926 voters approved an addition to the town charter that allowed for beer sales within town limits not just outside refreshment stands like those existing throughout Northern California at that time but also at local breweries within town limits if they met certain requirements such as being open three nights per week during business hours starting at 7 P.M.. In 1928 a fire destroyed most of the downtown business district however some local breweries survived including Alameda Brewing Company which moved into its current facility across from City Hall in 1951 becoming one of Santa Clara County’s largest brewers today with operations extending into Embarcadero District spanning several blocks near Terminal 3 San Francisco International Airport) .By 1933 there were only six businesses remaining in downtown Placerville compared to over 150 now extant throughout Sonoma county In 1945 a major flood destroyed much of rural western Sonoma County destroying homes, crops and barns while leaving many people homeless along riverside communities such as Eureka whose residents had come years earlier expecting more help from then US President Franklin D Roosevelt who had declared StateofSonoma during his visit despite having no personal knowledge about their situation
The first people to live in what is now Placerville were the Ohlone, who arrived around 900 A.D. The town was founded by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his wife, Margarita, in 1697. In 1846, placer gold was discovered in what is now Placerville and the town became a boomtown. By 1870, Placerville had a population of 1,500 people and it became an incorporated city in 1903. The city was renamed Placerville after J.P. Morgan in 1911 and it experienced a period of growth during World War II when the city created jobs for war workers. However, the economy shut down during the Vietnam War and Placerville lost its status as a major community until the late 1990s when the city started to experience some stability issues andruplication from new development
