Placerville is a small town in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 5,481 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Fresno. The town was founded in 1875 by John C. Placerville and his family as a farmstead known as Pleasant Valley. In 1886, the Placerville post office was established and remained in operation until it closed in 1951. In 1896, the first school in Placerville opened and remains in use to this day. The town began to grow rapidly after World War II when new businesses were developed such as a meatpacking plant and an auto dealership. By 1990, the number of residents had reached 9,000 and by 2000 it had reached 11,000. Today, Placerville remains a vibrant community with strong economic interests that continue to grow despite changing weather patterns and competition from other towns within Fresno County

By 1870, over 25% of all placerville residents were engaged in mining or prospecting activity, accounting for almost one-half (45%)of its total population growth since 1850 In 1876, George Hearn founded a lumber company that soon became known for its superior hardwood lumber products available throughout Northern California Hearn also donated land adjacent to his company's mills on which Placerville developed into an attractive city with high concentrations of residential and business buildings dating back to pre-World War II times
The area now known as Placerville was part of Rancho Segundo, a Spanish land grant given to Juan Bautista de Anza in 1776. The town was founded in 1853 by a group of American settlers led by Jedediah Smith. The town was named for John C. Placerville, an officer with the U.S. Army who served during the Mexican-American War and the California Gold Rush. In 1868,Placerville became a city when it was annexed by San Francisco. A fire destroyed most of the downtown business district in 1906, but Placerville rebuilt quickly and became one of the leading local economic engines during the 1920s and 1930s boom years in Northern California. In 1978, Placerville joined forces with San Jose to form the City of San Jose Combined Statistical Area (CSA).
