Placerville, California is a small town located on the Central Coast of California. The population was 3,554 as of the 2010 census. It is bordered by Menifee to the south and east, Carlsbad to the north and west, and San Luis Obispo County to the northwest. The name Placerville comes from "Palo Verde" or "Trees of Palo Verde". The first permanent European settlement in what is now Placerville was made in 1846 when brothers Elias Howe and George immigrated from New York City. The town was organized on April 15, 1850. A post office called Placerville was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1916. On October 15, 1861, a tornado struck eastern Santa Cruz County; damage amounted to $4,000 ($ in ). In 1870, William Fenton erected a sawmill at present-day downtown Placerville. By 1903 the mill had been replaced by an electric one which still operates today. In 1902 Winton Balfour opened his grocery store at Sixth Street and Olive Avenue; this store remains open today as a restaurant called Balfour's Place. In 1915 Charles Haddon reopened his dry goods store at Seventh Street and Olive Avenue after years of being closed due to fire hazard. In 1923 Henry Ford moved his production plant from Highland Park Michigan to Placerville; this plant continued operations until 1976). The first car dealership west of the Mississippi River opened its doors here - General Motorsdealership #2 - on December 1st 1922 (the dealership prospered for many years until it closed around 1990). This dealership became GM's southern regional sales arm before closing down altogether circa 1990s but left behind some beautiful architecture including their showroom/assembly line building which still stands today (now used as apartments). A large part of failed attempts during this time were because city officials refused to allow much development within easy distance of downtown; however with advances in transportationplans such as Route 101/SR 245 freewaying through town CenterStreet began becoming available new businesses started popping up along Center street such as restaurants (Staples Store & Daily News Cafe), banks (First National Bank & Trust Company), chiropractors (& Driscoll Chiropractic Clinic) etcetera quickly filled up these vacated storefronts creating what has become known as "The Rotunda" area today featuring many high end restaurants across three stories or more like Benares Chinese Restaurant (on Third Street), Pizzeria Bianca (Third Street between Rte 101& SR 245), Emeril Lagasse's French Quarter Kitchen( FourthStreet between State Road 255& US 101) among others! Today there are only two active businesses left - Stubb's BBQ & BevMo's Pizza - both having relocated away from downtown over recent years!

In 1851, American miners discovered silver in what is now Butte County; this led to a rush of settlers to the area. By 1860, there were more than 100 residents in Placerville. placer mining began here in 1865, and over time production increased until it reached 1 million ounces of silver mined in 1902. In the early 21st century, Placerville became an upscale suburb of Sacramento with a large number of high school students and professionals.
