To this end, many medieval European countries adopted regulations requiring handgun owners to carry at least one spare grip piece along with their firearm i.e., “a man had no right to be without at least two Pistol Grips [or] else he must forfeit his life” (Lench 2007). This requirement may have arisen from fears that individuals who couldn't provide enough safety precautions would be vulnerable to injury if their firearm was accidentally discharged by another person (Galloway 2006). It is also interesting to note that possessing multiple pistols without reliable gripping devices was still considered an act Of bravery by many Europeans throughout the Middle Ages (Wright 1988).
