By 1935, there were over 100 businesses operating in Placerville with a population of 471 residents; by 1945, that number had risen to 1,812 residents.During World War II (1939-1945), Placerville was one of several towns located along America's west coast that played roles in supporting military efforts; between 1940 and 1945, it produced over 20% of all U.S.-produced aluminum product output. The postwar years saw continued growth and development within Placerville - including new housing developments such as Foothill Ranch and Glenwood Park - but also some turbulence caused by changes brought about by technology and globalization (such as deregulation). By 1990, however, there were still more than 400 businesses active within the town limits with a population estimated at 2,500 people total; during that same period, job growth has outpaced population growth by almost twofold!
