Founded in 1852 by Reverend George Washington Smith, it served as the town's church until 1893 when it moved to nearby Bishop Pass road. Today, Placerville has a mix of older buildings from early American pioneer days mixed with newer structures dating from recent decades such as plazas and shopping malls. There are also several heritage churches including Saint John's Episcopal Church and Holy Cross Catholic Church which were built between 1902-1906 during efforts by many local residents to preserve downtowns that were being damaged or destroyed bythe 1906 San Francisco earthquake.

It is located on the Placer River and is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley metropolitan statistical area. The name "Placerville" comes from Spanish meaning "plain." The first Europeans to visit what is now Placerville were Mexican traders and soldiers who traveled down the Sacramento River in 1821 looking for new land to sell to Americans. They named their new settlement after José Gabriel María de San Miguel y Costilla, viceroy ofMexico City and president of Peru, who had just returned from exploring north America. The town's first post office was established in 1825, and it quickly became a center for agriculture because of its fertile soil and good water resources. By 1850, Placerville had a population of 3,000 residents and was becoming known as one of the most prosperous towns in California. In 1871, several students at Stanford University decided to found a school in rural Santa Clara County where they could offer affordable education to surrounding farmers. They named their school Stanford University; today it remains one of California's leading universities with over 100 campuses statewide. During World War II, Placerville played an important role as an airfield for bomber training flights out of nearby Monterey Bay Naval Air Station (now Point Reyes National Seashore). In 1951, when President John F Kennedy visited Calaveras County during his honeymoon travelogue across America he stayed at the Rancho Grande Adobe Resort & Spa which overlooks Point Reyes National Seashore - this event helped make Placerville an international community center for coastal Californians seeking refuge from global warming
