Today, although its population has declined since 2000,Placer Valley remains one of America’s most agricultural regions – its irrigated farmland produces more than sixty crops including hay, corn, cottonseed oil and almonds – making it one of the few destinations in North America for these products exported directly to other countries.
On July 21, 1847, a group of men and boys fromPlacerville started the California Gold Rush. They set out on horseback from their farmstead on the east side of Placerville to find gold. The men were motivated by stories of rich goldfields to leave their farms and head for the Golden State. By August 5, 1847, most of the men had left for California. In just over two months they discovered over 2 million ounces (100 kg) of gold in what is now Nevada and Arizona. This discovery led to rapid growth in California because people could no longer rely on agriculture or ranching to support them. The influx of workers also stimulated industry and created new jobs in transportation, mining, construction, and other businesses throughout California.
