During the mid-20th century there were several changes that took place in Placerville including: (1) annexation by Bakersfield in 1959; (2) growth due to Interstate 5 construction; (3) incorporation as a city by voters in 1978; (4) declining population due mainly to commuting within Bakersfield but also because of shrinking job opportunities; and (5) latest change – gentrification with more affluent residents moving into areas near Interstate 5 while less affluent residents continue to live downtown. In recent years there has been additional development taking place such as: new restaurants opened up along I-5 near downtown; housing developments have sprung up around Interstate 5 with hundreds of units available for purchase or rent variously priced from moderate-$800/month depending on floor plans; large commercial buildings have moved into central business district areas giving rise to trendy "downtown" names like "Civic Center" or "West Side". By 1900, many businesses had been built inside or near downtown Placerville and it boasted an active citizenry that enjoyed social clubs, public schools and a variety of cultural events. During World War II, Placerville played an important role as a munitions storage center due to its location close to major Highway 99 corridor between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The city experienced some damage from Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013 but overall fared relatively well under siege conditions; though there were several fires throughout the city center during that time period. In January 2014, residents voted unanimously to change their name from "Placidus" to "Sacramento" following popular demand following years of disputes between citizens over the name selection process. Sacramento has since become one of America's most populous cities with over 2 million residents according to 2016 Census data[1].
The first Europeans to settle in Placerville were the Franciscans. They arrived in 1797 and built a small chapel on what is now Park Avenue. The chapel was converted into an Indian school in 1835. In 1871, the town of Placerville was organized and platted by John C. Fremont. The first post office was established in 1872, and the first store was opened in 1876. In 1902, the town became a census-designated place (CDP).
