Placentia is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,814. The name comes from Latin word "placenta," meaning "belly" or "flank." The first permanent settlers in Placentia were Mexican soldiers who arrived in 1836. They built a rancho on the present-day site of Placentia and named it Rancho San Rafael after their patron saint, Santa Rafael. A post office was established at Rancho San Rafael in 1839, and the town began to grow around it. By 1860, Placentia had a courthouse and several blocks of white commercial buildings. In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant sent an army under General Alfred Terry to suppress the Populist movement in California. In response to this military intervention, many Californians took up arms against their new government and fought for Texas Ranger General John Wickersham as they drove out the Terrys. This event is known as the Battle of Placentia. Afterward, most of these Californians decided to stay within Mexico and founded Ciudad Juárez (now El Paso) as their new home. In 1886, when Placentia formed part of newly created Kern County%, one of its first actions was to build a jail with cells for seventy-five prisoners across three stories tall that still stands today on Main Street between Hervey Avenue and Citrus Avenue (just south of downtown). The jail was replaced by an annex in 1909 which served as county court house until 1935 when all county offices moved into what is now City Hall Square on State Street near Highway 99 (just east of downtown). In 1960–1961 local voters approved Measure C which unified both Kern County’s two predecessor counties – Imperial and Tulare – into one unit for political purposes only; however no action ever followed because there was opposition from some members of both Tulare County Board OF Supervisors and Kern County supervisors themselves who felt that annexation would result in job losses for their constituents living within Imperial or Tulare Counties respectively but without any corresponding benefits for those living within Placentia itself! It wasn’t until 1986 when city planners recommended that annexation be considered due to concerns about future growth potential brought about by increasing development along Interstate 15 northward adjacent to City Hall Square across from Valleyfair Park Shopping Center developments going forward! The town continued to grow in population until the early 1900s when it reached its peak due to agricultural production and ranching interests in the area. By 1907, Placentia had shrunk to its current size due to increased competition from larger towns in southern California. However, during World War II Placentia again grew rapidly due to the influx of military personnel stationed in nearby Monterey County. The town experienced an approximate explosion of population during the war with over 100% growth rate between 1940 and 1945. As a result of the war-time growth and prosperity, many new homes were built in downtown Placentia while older ones were converted into apartments or businesses. Today, downtown is home to a number of retail stores as well as numerous restaurants and bars that serve up fresh local cuisine throughout the day.
The town of Placentia was founded in 1876 by citizens of the nearby city of San Francisco. The small, unincorporated community grew quickly, and by 1912 it had a population of over 200. In 1916, Placentia became part of the new City of San Bernardino.
