Placentia, California is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 22,735 at the 2010 census. It is located on a peninsula on the Pacific Ocean east of downtown Los Angeles. The first Europeans to visit Placentia were members of the Spanish expeditiones de la India (1542-45) led by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and his brother Francisco Ortega y Gasset. On July 24, 1565, Diego Velázquez de Ayala arrived in what is now Placentia with his fleet of five vessels and Mission San Buenaventura was founded nearby on November 17, 1595. In 1836, during the Mexican–American War, General Antonio López Mora's army invaded Orange County and burned many villages including Placentia; however, no casualties were reported in Placentia itself. On February 12, 1837 Captain John Sutter discovered gold at Laguna Seca while exploring for mines in Southern California; this discovery made Placentia one of the most important towns in Southern Californian mining times. Gold production began immediately and continued until 1862 when quartz mines became available near present-day Pasadena. In 1850s placer mining operations recommenced in parts of central and eastern Santa Barbara County but ceased entirely around 1902 when all placermining activity shifted to sulfide mine development over deep drilling and claims panning as opposed to surface claims staking like today's miners do In 1916 an ice factory was built by United States Steel Company at Point Conception northeast of town which later became known as "The Ice Factory". The plant manufactured large blocks of ice that were shipped downriver for use throughout Southern California during winter months Additionally there was a small paper mill built about 1915 which produced newsprint for local newspapers
