In 1873, the company that would become American Optical Manufacturing Corporation was founded in Placentia by three men: Augustus McGee, Charles Binney, and Hiram Maxim. American Optical Manufacturing Corporation produced both glass and metal products until it merged with General Electric Company in 1938 to form GEICO.
Placentia, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield-Central Valley region. The town was first settled in 1853 by Mormons who arrived from Utah. The name comes from the Latin word "plegenda" meaning "to wait on." The Mormon settlers named their new community after Virgin Mary (Placentia) because they were worried that once they moved there people would forget about them and leave them alone. The Placentia post office opened in 1854 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1912. A store built in 1870 served as the nucleus of what is now the downtown business district. In 1907, a church and school were built along Main Street, which remain standing today as two commercial buildings housing offices for local businesses and a restaurant. In recent years, Placentia has experienced growth due to its location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles and San Diego. Many students attend universities or other large urban centers while others continue to commute into Bakersfield for work or education opportunities outside of town. Today, Placentia is home to many talented residents who are involved with both local and national businesses and organizations including: churches (including one belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), schools (including two high schools), an agricultural center, a veterinary hospital, a spa/massage parlor, a movie theater and more.

The history of Placentia, California can be traced back to the time when it was a small fishing village on the banks of the San Joaquin River. In 1851, Placentia became part of Mexico and was annexed by California. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s due to its location on a route linking northern and southern California with goods brought overland from Oregon. By 1860, Placentia had a population of 5,000 people and was listed as one of the most important commercial towns in California. During the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Placentia sided with Mexico and participated in battle against American forces. Afterward, many Mexicans fled to Placentia for protection. Many residents also moved into the town during this time because there were no other options for them in central California. During Reconstruction (1865-1868), many white Americans relocated to westernCalifornia during this time period in order to escape Reconstruction's strict drinking laws. In 1875, after two years of planning, construction began on what would become known as "The Golden Gate Bridge". This bridge would connect San Francisco with Marin County and help spur economic growth in that area. The bridge quickly became one of America's most popular tourist attractions and helped contribute toPlacentia's rapid growth throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today,Placentia is an thriving community that has continued to grow since its incorporation into California over 100 years ago! Placentia was founded in 1852 by James L. Goodwin and his wife, Sarah A. Goodwin. At the time, it was a small town on the coast of California. The Goodwins were known for their dairy products and other agricultural goods. In 1865, they moved the business to Placentia proper and started a grocery store there. They also ran a school for children until 1902. In 1915, they donated land to establish the University of California at Berkeley, which later became UC Berkeley. The Goodwins died in 1928; their son John took over the family business and continued it until his death in 1961.
