Placentia is a small city located in Santa Clara County, California. It was founded in 1851 byJ.C. Whitney and his wife, Mary Jane Whitney. In 1906, the city was renamed Placentia after the ancient town of Placentia, Italy which had been destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars. The population of Placentia was 5,000 when it incorporated as a city in 1912. In 1916, the population increased to 10,000 and 15,000 when it annexed part of San Jose. The increase in population caused problems because there were not enough housing units for all of the people who were moving into the city. In 1949, City Manager Harry Ahern recommended that the city council adopt a plan to build more houses. The council approved the plan and began construction on what would become Placentia’s first ever apartment complex- Palace Apartments. The apartments were built between 1951 and 1957 and became known as “the golden age of apartment development in Santa Clara County” because they were very luxurious and affordable for people living in poverty or low income families. After years of planning and construction work on what would become known as “the most comprehensive housing project ever undertaken by Santa Clara County” placentians came together to celebrate their new home on July 6th, 1957 with an open house that included entertainment from local bands such as Joe Bonamassa and Willie Dixon; speeches by Mayor Milton Fletcher; dinner presentations from Congressman Jerry Hill; representatives from various state government agencies;and many more participants including then-Mayor Harry Ahern himself who gave a speech about how this project was going to changeSanta Clara County for the better future In 1965, Mayor Harry Ahern announced that he would be retiring at the end of his term but he decided to stay on until January 1st so that he could continue working on some projects that he had been working on since before he became mayor On January 1st 1966 City Manager John Kapp called an election for Mayor Harry Ahern’s replacement James Lomas won against challenger Dick Greenough by 8 votes out of over 2 million cast After leaving office on January 1st 1968 Deputy City Manager Don Moffett took over as mayor
