Placentia is a small, unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. Situated on the south bank of the San Joaquin River, it was founded by Mission Indians in 1847. The name may derive from the Latin word "plessis" meaning "place of childbirth." The post office at Placentia was established in 1852 and changed its name to Placentia in 1865. The town quickly became an important agricultural center due to its fertile soil and large water supply. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved from Placentia to Salinas because of population growth and mail volume changes in Kern County. Today, most local services are provided by Salinas or Madera County residents. The first permanent settler in Placentia was James Hogg who arrived with his family in 1847. He built a cabin near what is now State Route 46. A year later he married Maria Sanchez and they started a small farmstead that grew into a major ranching operation with over 100 head of livestock by 1850. By 1860, Hogg had developed another business – tanning hides – whichrewith his brother-in-law Jeronimo Reyes. They also began shipping crops downriver to Stockton for market sale before landing at Anza Bay for loading onto ships headed for ports on the West Coast. This trade helped support their growing ranching operation until railroads came through the area and replaced horse drawn transportation as Placentia's primary means of communication with other parts of California during the late 19th century. In 1916, when Ulysses S Grant awarded placer gold medals to Californians for their exploration efforts along the Central Valley floor, Placentia received special recognition as one of nineteen towns located within Alameda Countywest of Sacramento (the easternmost county then). As part of this award ceremony held at Fort Mason in San Francisco, Mayor Willis Coney presented Governor George Wickersham with a gold medal honoring all Californians who had participated therein since November 1st 1910 inclusive: "This medal represents not only interesting work done by men within our own borders but also excellent examples of what American enterprise can do when put into good hands." On July 4th 1912 President Woodrow Wilson announced that allgold medals would be made available for presentation at locations throughout America based upon nominations received from members thereof; these were finally presented at ceremonies conducted at Ft Washington Park outside New York City on October 16th 1923….Placetita residents contributed $1 per capita towards expenses associated with hosting this prestigious event…." It was thru this dedication that many fine citizens today remember those early days….. For more than sixty years after World War II ended our town has been proudest member d’Alameda County………. placer mining brought wealth hereabouts such as no other place ever enjoyed….. Our people have always been proudful “ placentalians”…………..ostensibly because we did not take kindly to being told what to do…………………placentalians know best how things should be done
The area now known as Placentia was once part of the Pajaro Valley, which extended from Monterey County to San Luis Obispo County. The Pajaro Valley was divided into several regions by the Santa Cruz Mountains, and Placentia was in Region IV. In 1847, Captain John C. Frémont explored the California Coast Range and discovered the valley that would become Placentia. In 1850, Antonio Blanco settled at what is now downtown Placentia, naming it after his hometown of Santiago de Chile. In 1853–54, two Mormon brothers named David Whitmer and James Fenton built a log cabin on a bluff above the intersection of First Street and Second Avenue in present-day downtown Placentia. They called their settlement "Mormonville". By 1860, Mormonans had withdrawn from California and many residents left town for various reasons including religious differences with Brigham Young's Utah Mormons; some also left because they were not given land in nearby Sacramento or Stockton to build homes on. The last remaining Mormon settlers abandoned their communal farmstead on July 16, 1861 when Company H of the Ulysses S. Grant’s Mexico – American Expedition arrived atlos Angeles Landing seeking passage to New Mexico without stopping atplacentalias Bayou for water supply purposes only to find that there was nobayou available; instead local Mexicans supplied them with fresh water from wells dothe area
