The city growth continued until 1916 when it lost its status as an independent municipality to Redding due to annexation by that city. After World War II ended, many residents left Placentia for various reasons including changing economics and social changes in postwar America. Today, there are only a few buildings from earlier times remaining in the town center while other areas have been abandoned or converted into housing developments. The town has experienced periodic economic decline since its heyday but is still home to some of its more popular cultural attractions such as its annual Christmas parade which features floats made by local childrens' organizations and its popular Oktoberfest beer festival which draws thousands of tourists each year
In 1848, Placentia became the third town in California after Santa Cruz and Monterey.
