Placentia, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Delmarva Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Placentia were the Mescalero Band of Native Americans who arrived in 1847 and named their community after a place in Mexico City where they had been staying while on their way to make an American adventure. In 1853, General John C. Fremont established a fort here and began trading goods with the Mexican government. The post office was first called Fort Mojave but changed its name to Placentia in 1865 due to objections from other towns within Kern County that were already named for Spanish settlements or places of military importance such as Yuma and Santa Ana Valley. In 1915, when it became apparent that World War I would cause significant destruction throughout Southern California, President Woodrow Wilson ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to take over management of emergency administration within the United States. On July 1, 1916, FEMA created Placentia as one of its initial receiving areas for refugees coming from eastern Oregon and western Washington during World War I’s war-time hysteria known as “the Great Migration”. More than 5,000 people from these two states came to Placentia between 1914-1916; most went into work at local businesses such as Ford Motor Company and Kaiser Aluminum Works which were then closed due to wartime restrictions on production by companies unable to operate with any excess workers because of munitions production quotas set by Congress. The community grew rapidly during wartime thanks chiefly to donations received from individuals or organizations such as The Ford Foundation and Alcoa Industries which agreed to finance housing projects for plumbers and welders displaced by war materiel shortages caused by America’s entry into World War I – both events helped fuel agricultural expansion throughout Kern County during this time period also known as “The Golden Age of Farming” although there has been no real equivalent since then given how much agriculture has changed since Placentia was founded over eighty years ago! Postwar growth continued until 1950 when Decline Of The Western Farm Belt led To A Decrease In Population And decrease In Economy As Well As Increased Outpatient Care Costs Which Annually Affected Local Hospitals! Today many descendants still live in downtown Placentia & scattered throughoutSouthern Kern Counties including Bakersfield (& Humboldt), Madera & Tuolumne counties
