In 2013, Mayor Donny Joaquin announced that Placentia would become known as "the most diverse city in Northern California" due to its growing population of Latinos (reported at 27 percent of the total population). Placentia has experienced several natural disasters including devastating fires in 2011 and 2016; powerful earthquakes that have destroyed homes; and numerous hurricanes over the years that have affected both locals and tourists alike. Despite these challenges, Placentia has continued to grow economically and culturally since becoming part of Northern California.
