This led to some businesses expanding into Placentia; one such business was Jardine & Watt's grocery store which remains open today as a local institution. One important event that took place during this time period occurred when Captain Elisha Sutter discovered gold near present-day Healdsburg outside of Santa Clara County on January 24th 1850 (). This event helped spur development in what is now Healdsburg as well as throughout central San Andreas County including Placentia. One resident who made significant contributions to early placer mining operations within present-day Plumas County was John Doolittle who mined for silver over three years starting from 1859 until 1860 along old Ulysses S. A number of institutions have been built here such as Gratz High School (now Gratz Community College), Placentia City Hall (now part of University Of Southern California) and several churches including St. Stephens Episcopal Cathedral and Christmastime Chapel (now Faith Lutheran Church).
