The town was founded by Anglo-Saxon settlers in 1851 as part of Rancho Rinconada de las Pulgas (later Rancho Santa Clara). placentia merged with neighboring towns of Palo Alto and Gilroy in 1912 to form one city. In 1978, Placentia became an incorporated city under the name of Santa Clara County. The history of Placentia can be traced back to 1851 when Anglo-Saxon pioneer Captains Daniel Bache and James Atherton built a rancho called Rinconada de las Pulgas northwest of present daySanta Clara City. The land for this rancho had been purchased from Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo by Captain Bache and his brother-in-law George WetherbeeJr., Sr.. On July 13th, 1851, Bache entered into a lease with Wetherbee for 640 acres (2 square miles) of what would eventually become known as Rinconada de Las Pulgas. This parcel included most of what is now part of Placentia. In 1855, Captain Bache married Mrs Maria Escobar and moved to his new rancho; however Maria died soon thereafter leaving him with two young children: Commodore John Hargrave Farragut II serving as Captain Bache's Executor while Mrs Escobar lived out her final days at their home in Milpitas before dying there tooometime after 1880; Commodore John Hargrave Farragut II together with his father Rear Admiral John Francis Hargrave were buried at sea off Point Reyes National Seashore on December 5th 1865 after their battle against Spanish forces during the Mexican–American War aboard USS " Victoria" (1865). 4 years later another captain named James Dyer bought some 160 acres north east fromCaptain Bache which became the nucleus for what would become today's community center near where Interstate 280 meets Main Street . This area saw heavy construction activity due toplacer goldmining operations taking place nearby beginning in 1870 until production ceased almost fifty years later when environmental regulations ended that particular type or mining operation
The history of Placentia, California dates back to the 18th century. The area that is now Placentia was part of the Rancho San Luis Rey Mexican land grant given to José Maria Monterey in 1777. In 1821, the United States erected a military post at what is now Point Conception, California. On December 7, 1851, California became an independent republic and on April 14,1852, Placentia became its first city.
