Placentia, California is a small city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Central Coast of California between Sonoma and Marin counties. The name "Placentia" comes from Natives Pueblo de Placencia which means "place of childbirth." The first Europeans to come to what is now Placentia were Spanish missionaries in 1821 who founded a mission here named Nuestra Señora de la Concepción Convento de San Francisco de Asís. The town started as a Mormon colony in 1847 and grew rapidly due to its location on good soil and its water supply from two springs along the coast. In 1872, the railroad arrived and brought with it new businesses and residents, including many farmers who developed land around the townsite. Today, much of downtown Placentia is still populated by descendants of early settlers. The town has been known for its seafood since before people ever set foot in what is now Placentia county. Fishermen have been harvesting sea bass, bream, salmon, mackerel and other seafood here since Pre-Columbian times. Coastal villagers used local materials such as clamshells and oyster shells to line their canoes during fishing trips into coastal waters during winter months when there was no ocean available for harvest In 1906 an act was passed that changed the name of San Luis Obispo County from Viejo County toSan Fernando County after Mexican president Porfirio Diaz's decision to take control of Alta California following Mexico's victory in the Mexican Revolution
In 1847, Placentia was founded by Captain John C. Fremont and his men after they discovered gold in the Sacramento River. The town grew quickly, and by 1850 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1851, Placentia became the capital of California when the state was created from parts of Mexico and Oregon. The city experienced rapid growth during its early years, with construction continuing until well into the 20th century. By 1915, Placentia had reached a population of 3,500 people. However, following World War I and the economic recession that followed, Placentia began to decline in popularity as compared to other California cities. Its population peaked at 4,000 in the early 1960s but declined thereafter. In 2000, however, Placentia again saw increasing levels of development as aresult of its role as an international trade center for Central Valley agriculture. Today, it is one of the most important areas in Central Valley history due to its unique cultural heritage and importance in agricultural production
