Pittsburg, California was founded on December 12, 1868 by James H. Clements and his brother William H. Clements as the City of Pittsburg. The city was named for General Andrew Jackson Pitts and was located in what is now El Sobrante County. In 1919, the United States Army built a military post in Pittsburg called Camp Lewis near Easton Avenue and South Mayfair Road. The post served as an ammunition depot until it closed in 1930. On October 1, 1935, the community of Pittsburg annexed the City of El Sobrante and on November 3, 1935, the first meeting of its new city council took place. In 1939, General Douglas MacArthur ordered all U.S. military posts in California to be automated so that they could be used less frequently and moved nearer to home bases at various locations including Camp Atterbury in San Diego and Fort Sill in Oklahoma City. The Post Office building at 5th Street & Broadway became known as Headquarters for Automated Weapons Development Command (AWDC). The Post Office building continued to serve as Headquarters for AWDC until it closed on July 14, 1945 due to poor conditions inside and damage caused bybombing during World War II which had destroyed much of downtown Pittsburg On October 1st 1946- after years of planning- Mayor Wm Kline gave approval for construction of a new public library with a location adjacent to the old Post Office building; construction began immediately with funds from local citizens who contributed time and labor . The new library opened its doors on January 15th 1949 after more than three years of hard work by volunteer staff members ; it was one of the first libraries built using funds raised through library taxes . In 1951- following moves within AWDC - Headquarters relocated once again when responsibility for weapons development command were reassigned to Aberdeen Proving Ground , Maryland which included responsibility for production testing associated with jet propulsion research . In 1957- Headquarters moved yet again when command passed from Aberdeen Proving Ground - this time to Wright Patterson Air Force Base where it remained until 1971 when control passed back to Aberdeen Proving Ground

Pittsburg is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area and is home to the University of Central Oklahoma. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pittsburg were Spanish missionaries in 1819 who named it San Gabriel de los Angeles after the Archangel Gabriel. Pittsburg was founded by Captain George Hearn in 1853 as a stage stop on his journey from Stockton to Lompoc. It became a mining town when gold was discovered there in1867. The town prospered until 1925 when a fire destroyed most of its buildings and businesses. In 1951, Pittsburg joined with other cities in Kern County to form the Bakersfield Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). In 1958, Pittsburg became an independent city and adopted its current name. As an agricultural town for many years before that, Pittsburg has produced corn, wheat, cotton and other crops while also manufacturing items such as irrigation equipment and lawn mowers. In recent years though joblessness has caused some families to move away from downtown Pittsburg because of crime rates; however new development has been established nearby including a bioscience park which will house research laboratories into energy production and clean air technologies

The largest single crop produced here is grapes, followed by apples and pears; other major crops include almonds, pistachios, honeydews and watermelons.
