American Optical Corporation produced two types of telescopes: high quality models that were used for scientific research while lower quality products were marketed as consumer optics products such as those used by teachers, farmers, astronomers, and other amateur enthusiasts. He built an adobe jail which served as the first courthouse in Pittsburg until 1861 when a new courthouse was built which still stands today on Main Street. In 1865, John Fetterman became mayoralty with Wm Henson becoming sheriff that year; both men held office until 1870 when they were replaced by James Ewing and Hiram Johnson respectively. In 1863–1865 there was also a Ulysses S Grant military march through town during the American Civil War seeking battle sites south of Bakersfield; most notably Battle Round Top Cemetery east of town where Union General Philip Sheridan was killed April 9 1865 while leading 1st Brigade (6th Division) within Sector IX upon reaching Hill 471 northeast thereof about 13 miles due northwest from present-day Pittsburg (then known as Beatty). This event helped solidify local support for Confederate forces throughout southern Kern County during that war years despite entire township being Union territory at that time.. A post office called "Pittsburg" opened in 1868, later renamed "Jensenburg." A railroad depot went upriver from this original site around 1870-71 which served mainly freight trains but also occasionally carried passengers; it burned down in 1906 but was rebuilt and reopened as an express train depot later that same year before being destroyed again by fire in 2009.. The old express train depot remains standing today adjacent to Interstate 5 just south of downtown Pittsburg.. The first store building (now demolished) at 6th & Main Streets Dates back To 1886!
