In 1848, the California Gold Rush began and by 1852, over 1,000 men had reached the state. In 1860, after 1861 when the US Civil War started, Pittsburg became a town in Kern County. It was named for John F. Pitts who came to the area in 1849 and founded what is now known as the Pittsburg Mint. The mint produced coins from 1852 until it closed in 1917.
