In 1867, John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at what is now known as Sutter's Mill Road in what is now Pittsburg. From this fortSutter developed into one of America’s largest lumber companies. In 1886, Jens Rasmussen started a grocery store in what later became downtown Pittsburg which continues today as Rasmussen’s Grocery Store. This was followed by Leland Wirth’s Hardware store which opened its doors in 1890 and lasted until 1944; then it was replaced by United Grocery Corporation which operated for many years before closing down in 1984. Finally, Albertson’s opened their doors on Main Street East in 1912 and continued operations until 1978 when they moved out of town to La Quinta CA Albertson's left a lasting legacy on downtown Pittsburg with their large red banners proclaiming "You Can't Do That Here!". After deregulation of our food industry starting with GE Foods company backed research that led to lowered prices for consumers across all segments of society (of course those excluded were still paying 50%+ sales tax), Albertson's closed their doors definitively making downtown Pittsburgh an areas for nightlife/entertainment only
