Pittsburg is a small city located in Kern County, California, about midway between Bakersfield and Davis. It was founded by the German settlers in 1868 as Pittsburg Landing on the San Joaquin River. The City of Pittsburg was incorporated in 1912. The first post office at Pittsburg was opened in 1868, and the city would not be granted city status until 1912. At that time it had a population of only seventy-five people. The original town site was located on the south bank of the San Joaquin River, just upstream from what is now downtown Pittsburg. On July 12, 1870, Jens Christoffersen arrived southwest of present-day Pittsburg with his family and started to build a new home near where he would later reside. That same day one hundred fifty five other pioneers set out from Emigrant Creek Station northeast of today's downtown Pittsburg and began their trek westward overland to this new location which they christened "Pittsburg Landing." The land for what became Pittsburg Landing originally consisted of three square miles (8 km²). Today's core business district - centered around First National Bank - occupies much of that original acreage dating back to those early days when lumbering and farming were primary industries. Many pioneer families returned to Germany during World War I because there were no jobs available hereafter in Europe; however, many others stayed behind and raised families hereabouts until after World War II when industry took over most Pittsburgh's economic base. In 1925, then- Mayor Harry Wirths unveiled plans for an airport adjacent to First National Bank which would eventually become Kirtland Air Force Base; however these plans never came to fruition due to budgetary constraints within the Department of Defense following World War II. In 1962 Measure O – designed by City Manager John Ahern – authorized annexation by the City of Boise, Idaho resulting in an influx of high school students seeking opportunities closer to their homes rather than attend schools within commuting distance from cities like Pasadena or El Paso; however this move did not sit well with some residents who felt they had been left behind economically since annexation occurred years earlier than necessary given existing infrastructure requirements within Kern County alone including multiple highways/roads exiting into town limits as well as numerous water systems serving surrounding farms/villages etc., all without any corresponding benefit bestowed upon them either financially or otherwise throughout that period leading up to said annexation decision thereby creating somedegree resentment among some residents who continue to call themselves "left Behind".
