The name "Pittsburg" was chosen by Captain George Ewing Smith who surveyed and laid out sections of present day Pittsburg on December 21, 1837 for Rancho Laguna del Norte Mexican land grantee Domingo Faustino Pacheco. The town was platted on February 14, 1839 by James Waddell with the help of surveyor John Sutter at a cost of $6000 dollars (). On July 26, 1850 Waddell sold all but one acre (0.40 km2) to John Hargrave who built up a small family farm around what later became known as Waddell Plaza/Waddells Addition (). Hargrave renamed his property "Pittsburgh". A post office called "Pittsburgh" opened in 1860 and continued open until it was discontinued in 1916 ().
