By 1850, Pittsburg had become an important commercial center due to its location near the Butterfield Overland Mail route and its access to irrigation water from the Feather River. In 1851, Jno. Bradford founded a newspaper called "The Pittsburg Enterprise" which became one of the leading newspapers in California.
In 1855, John Sutter arrived in Pittsburg and founded what would be known as Sutter's Ranch which later became part of UC Berkeley. After purchasing land here for $5 per acre (in what is now Fresno), he started farming goods such as cattle and potatoes for sale along his road system which extended all the way to Stockton and Los Angeles respectively. In 1860, Sutter donated land to build Hope College; it opened in 1861 under president Abraham Lincoln as America's third college established by private subscription without any government funding or assistance. The school became one of America's largest colleges with over 2700 students graduating each year between 1860 and 1900 inclusive. In 1865–66 brick buildings were erected on Capitol Hill following plans created by architect James Ayrton around that time. bricks continued being produced until 1907 when they were replaced with concrete due to sanitary reasons.
During World War II many industries closed down including steel production but industry restarted soon afterwards thanks to wartime lend-lease programs.

Pittsburg is located on the banks of the Arroyo Seco River, north of downtown Los Angeles and east of Riverside. The first permanent settler in Pittsburg was George Witherspoon in 1847 and he founded a trading post near what is now downtown Pittsburg. By 1860, there were 10 businesses in town with a total population of 143 people. In 1865, two men named Sprague and Goodrich built a dam across the river to create an impoundment that would serve as their town's water supply. The town got its name from John A. Pitts (1811-1892), one ofsprague&goodrich's partners who donated land for the development and also helped finance it. Pittsburg experienced growth during World War II as most industries turned to war production; however, by 1945 it had shrunk to 3 businesses with a population of 153 people due largely to wartime relocation policies limiting civilian populations within military zones subject to regulation by the War Department). However, following World War II growth resumed with new arrivals and industrialization brought about by postwar suburban development around Pittsburg Valley; today, Pittsburg has over 20 businesses and continuesto grow rapidly with plans for over $400 million worth of retail development in its five boroughs over next 25 years! The history behind this city can be traced back to 1847 when George Witherspoon arrived in Southern California from England on horseback looking for land to establish himself as a farmer with his new wife Maria Lomas (née French).
